Joel ha iniziato a suonare nel primo complesso a quattordici anni, in seguito ha partecipato ad altri complessi e suonato nei piano bar col nome "Bill Martin". Il primo suo album Cold Spring Harbor è uscito nel 1971 e da allora ne sono stati pubblicati molti altri, alcuni dei quali hanno raggiunto traguardi di vendita e di successo molto significativi. Il grande successo è esploso nel 77 con l'album The Stranger, approfittando della pausa dalle scene che si era preso Elton John, il pianista britannico a cui Joel ,bene o male, si ispirava con la sua musica. Successivamente, un ventennnio più tardi, con Elton John ha allestito alcuni tour con concerti che hanno visto anche ciascuno suonare le canzoni dell'altro (Face To Face). Billy Joel nel 1999 è stato incluso nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Joel è cresciuto a Long Island, al di fuori della Città di New York, in una città chiamata Hicksville, nonostante ciò, le sue canzoni contengono molti riferimenti alla New York metropolitana ed urbana, particolarmente l'Isola. Inoltre alla Contea di Lehigh, Pennsylvania, ha dedicato una delle sue canzoni più popolari, Allentown, uscita nel 1982. La canzone, una delle più famose di Joel, costituisce un ritratto della vita nella Allentown industriale, nei primi anni '80. Negli ultimi anni, Joel, pur continuando i tour in giro per il mondo, ha interrotto la sua attività di cantautore, ritornando al suo amore per la musica classica e sta sperimentando in quell'area. Fantasies and Delusions, il suo primo album di pezzi classici ha ottenuto una risposta tiepida dalla critica ma ha raggiunto la vetta nella classifica delle vendite di musica classica. Le sue raccolte di successi, pubblicate a ritmo regolare, continuano a vendere molto bene, soprattutto in USA.
