L'allora produttore di Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones racconta che, quando gli telefonò per proporgli di collaborare con il cantante, Eddie attaccò il telefono per due volte perché non credeva che fosse vero. Il giorno della registrazione dell'assolo, Eddie era arrivato in studio di cattivo umore. Sistemata la strumentazione, chiese al fonico di fare una take di prova. Terminata la registrazione, Eddie si mostrò insoddisfatto del risultato, ma il fonico no. Fu così che quella take "di prova" venne utilizzato per il disco. Eddie Van Halen rifiutò di essere pagato per questo lavoro. Parecchi anni dopo, Jennifer Batten eseguì l'assolo di Beat It di fronte a Eddie in persona. L'esecuzione fu impeccabile.
