Il 13 maggio 1981, Papa Giovanni Paolo II subì un attentato da parte di Mehmet Ali Ağca, un killer professionista turco, che gli sparò due colpi di pistola.Pochi minuti dopo essere entrato in piazza San Pietro per un'udienza generale, mentre si trovava a bordo della sua Papamobile scoperta, Karol Wojtyła fu ferito gravemente all'addome e all'indice della mano destra, da due proiettili sparati da Ali Ağca.
