Nel 1981 il suo primo singolo, Kids in America, raggiunge il secondo posto delle classifiche inglesi e vende 2,5 milioni di copie nel mondo, un ottimo lancio per l'album di esordio, intitolato semplicemente Kim Wilde. Nel 1984 passa alla MCA e si impone nel panorama pop internazionale pubblicando molti album, tra cui sono da ricordare Another Step (1986) e Close (1988), oltre a numerosi singoli di successo. Fu tuttavia grazie ad un rifacimento di un brano di Diana Ross & The Supremes, You Keep Me Hangin'On, che nel 1986 raggiunse la vetta delle classifiche americane.
